One of my much cherished research goals is to work in the area of renewable energy systems. I am quite intrigued by the recent developments in solar energy systems that are producing superior solar panels as well as cheaper technology that also lasts longer. Geoffrey Grossman’s work at MIT is quite impressive in this regard. He developed Origami-based three-dimensional solar panels using evolutionary algorithms.

The key idea behind innovation in this feat is to have a realistic solar panel and to integrate it with a machine learning algorithm. The learning algorithm helps produce novel designs with trial and error, as is the case with any machine learning algorithm. I have been writing in the past about how to develop controllers for UAVs using machine learning. Similar ideas precisely map to this domain as well. The only difference being that instead of developing controllers, we evolve designs for solar panels.

I compiled a list of various online solar systems simulators. I hope that they can be used to come up with good innovative work on this.

For quite some time, I have been considering it incumbent upon myself to write a research proposal about renewable energy systems. This desire has been a part of my research interests. Moreover, given its climate, Pakistan has a huge potential for renewable energy systems. Solar energy systems and wind farm engineering solutions can be particularly successful. A Grant Proposal For Solar Energy Systems

Pakistan suffers from an acute energy crisis. Electricity load shedding is on the rise. It is normal to observe electricity outages of up to twelve hours per day in most parts of the country. Sometimes this can be more than that as well. As a solution for this many institutions run oil based electricity generators. It only takes some sensitivity to realize that it is a sheer wastage of a limited amount of a commodity that oil is. An alternative to this is to deploy renewable energy systems all over the country. A good starting point could be to install rooftop solar panels on campuses of academic institutions. This grant proposal is written as a request for monetary funding for this.
